Simmental Fleckvieh Beef - Vision
25.02.2005
author: Gregory S. Nolan, MBA

  1. Beef Simmental Fleckvieh -- The Beef purpose Simmental Fleckvieh Beef breed has spread throughout Europe - England, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Findland, the Americas, Austral-Asia, Africa, & Russia, and is well known for carrying high economic traits, environmental adaptability & is considered very important as a principal Beef Breed to many countries for Beef production.
  2. The World's Breed - The Simmetnal Fleckvieh Breed has grown world wide on a basis of primarily a Beef purpose outside Europe, Dual purpose within Europe.. The Breed is is used as a Dual purpose in some countries of Africa, South & Central America. Of the 41 million registered Simmental Fleckviehs world wide;  recent reports indicate that the Breed is distributed about 58 % of all herdbook registered cows is used in dual purpose systems and about 42 % in beef systems.   If Simmental Fleckvieh is to truly be the world's breed, it has to embrace the two parts as separate objectives but sharing a common genetic past, as other breeds have.
  3. Cross Breeding - For crossing breeding programs with the other beef breeds Simmental Fleckvieh is used the as the best option Maternal cross because  of high milk & mothering abilities, and also used as a Terminal cross for efficient beef production. Simmental Fleckvieh adds milk & higher weaning ability to the cow herds of Beef producers, and increases yield of the carcass by offering a lower bone, higher muscle mass than other Beef Breeds & Dual purpose.
  4. Maternal Beef Simmental Fleckvieh crossbreeding - Used to cross the three largest Maternal Beef Breeds of Angus, Brahman & Nelore; and the many other Beef breeds used throughout the world; to add milk, calving ease & maternal abilities while increasing or maintaining important carcass values. The motto of the Breed for use as a Maternal Beef cross is, "You will produce the best replacement females while maintaining excellent slaughter male calves!" or " You can produce milk without beef but not Beef without Milk !!".  Simmental Fleckvieh exists in many forms across the world for this Beef purpose & have been adapted to regional needs for crossbreeding systems; Red & white faced, black & polled for the ranges of North America & polled Red factor for the consistency of colour in Beef herds in North American, Australia & New Zealand.
  5. Terminal Beef Simmental Fleckvieh crossbreeding - Within the Simmental Fleckvieh Beef genetic lines, exist lines that are extreme for muscle & meat production. Canada, South Africa, England, Ireland & most recently the USA & Brazil have developed Simmental Fleckvieh lines used for terminal breeding. These lines have massive muscle mass, rapid gain & very moderate milk.
  6. World Beef Systems -- Economically efficient Beef production systems are being developed world wide, and the success of Simmental Fleckvieh will be based upon productive beef purpose traits such as fertility, calving ease, structural correctness, low feed requirements, easy of fleshing, moderate bone mass in the carcass called Density, marbling & fat distribution in the muscling. In expanding beef producing countries like Brazil, now the largest Beef exporter in the world, great demand for efficient beef genetics for cross breeding maternal & terminal traits, with minimum inputs, will be a key to success for this breed.
  7. Specific Beef Breed production -- The influence of Simmental Fleckvieh genetics in extensive beef breeding will increase in the future as the Breed embraces efficiencies of moderation & low maintenance qualities of the specific beef production systems. Simmental Fleckvieh will become more and more popular worldwide in Beef producing countries when they are understood to not require great amounts of feed as does Dual or dairy cattle. Most beef producing countries have specified Breeds for Milk and for Beef.
  8. Dual Purpose Beef production -- In Europe, beef production is used in classic dual purpose breed milk & meat production -  with one breed satisfying the market with milk & beef. Simmental Fleckvieh can be the most important breed in this category.
  9. The Future -  Only as a united Breed, can we move forward to become the most specialized Cattle Breed in the world. We must embrace ourselves as a multi purpose breed and work together in a respectful manner from all areas of production systems - Milk, Dual & Beef. The are uses for the Simmental Fleckvieh breed in all three areas, and we must work together and find synergy as one to dominate the three areas of bovine production systems.
  10. WSFF - The WSF, later the WSFF, was formed in 1974, to satisfy three main objectives; i) Build a Universal Standard & understanding of the breed; ii) Develop a World-wide Pedigree; and iii) Bring together Simmental Fleckvieh breeders from around the world together once every two years to discuss the differences and similarities of breeding Simmental Fleckvieh world wide. This Global vision has held the Breed together with it's many different uses and idealisms; and the WSFF will play a very important role in the future of this Breed.

In August of 2004, The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation ( WSFF ) embarked on Global Strategy; the that should be embraced by all member countries. http://www.wsff.info/index.php?file=www/en/members/journal.html&journal_id=10
Simmental Fleckvieh maybe the only cattle breed worldwide that is suited for all production systems, from dairy ranching to an intensive milk and beef production & large extensive beef stations of Brazil & Australia; if we unite in a Global Strategy that embraces all member countries and accepts the need for regionalization for success, while maintaining a Global outlook on the Breed; Simmental Fleckvieh will continue it's growth world wide.

Think Globally - Act locally.
